The day on 5 May “is an opportunity to draw the public’s attention to the problems and challenges faced by people with disabilities in their daily lives and at work. It is also a day to demonstrate tolerance and equality, on which it is worth recalling that everyone has equal rights to participate actively in social, family and working life.” (Source  accessed 05.05.2025)
When do we talk about discrimination?
Discrimination occurs when a person is treated worse than another person in a similar situation because of his or her disability (direct discrimination). It can also be encountered when seemingly neutral criteria, rules or practices put people with disabilities at a particular disadvantage compared to others (indirect discrimination).
“5 May is the European Day against Disability Discrimination, now also celebrated as the European Day for Independent Living. It was launched in France in the early 1990s under the slogan “Rendez-vous de la Dignité” – “Meeting with Dignity”. In Poland, the Day of Dignity of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities is also celebrated on the same day.”
The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities “reaffirmed the right of persons with disabilities to the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms and to respect for their inherent dignity. Everyone has the right to live independently in the community. Independent living means equal opportunities, rights and full participation in all aspects of community life. For this you need accessible public space and support services provided in the local environment.” (Source accessed 05.05.2025)
Experiencing a disability or long-term serious illness may affect you or someone close to you.
It is a difficult situation that often requires a lot of sacrifices, excellent organisation, but also the help of others.
If you find yourself tired and sluggish and your everyday life becomes too much to bear, it is worth seeking help.
