What is economic violence?

Economic violence is a form of psychological violence. It is defined as “behaviors designed to control the ability of one partner over another to acquire, maintain and use household resources. It is economic abuse aimed at maintaining dominance and control of the partner.”

A person who uses economic violence takes advantage of his partner’s dependence on his income or assets, and forces him to be submissive and obedient.
Economic violence also includes controlling access to health care, employment, education, exclusion from financial decision-making, lack of authority to own, use and dispose of property rights things.

Economic violence is also the destruction of personal or jointly owned belongings, leaving unattended a person who, due to illness, age or disability, cannot meet essential needs.
