International Lefthanders Day

August 13 2024

International Lefthanders Day – “nothing special” – some of you may think, especially the younger ones, who don’t remember that left-handed people were discriminated against until recently.

Did you know that in Poland, in the 70s, left-handedness was considered worse than right-handedness?

Today, it seems almost unbelievable that the dominant side of the body would decide who is better or worse, perceived positively or negatively by society.

Today, it is hard to imagine that left-handedness was once considered a reason for shame and such behaviors as forcing left-handed children to write with their right hand!

Those times are fortunately gone, but they are not that distant…
This is a good time to think about what outrages us TODAY?

What “otherness” arouses controversial feelings instead of acceptance?

Why?

Every time something in another person who does not harm anyone seems “abnormal” to us… let’s go back to the thought of left-handedness – not long ago it was on that “list” – which is hard for us to imagine today…
In a few years, this “otherness” that you think negatively about today – will be a common, ordinary, everyday and equal phenomenon. Like left-handedness, women wearing trousers, marriages between people of different skin colors, crying boys and men and many, many others…

Acceptance instead of hate – let this be your slogan for today
