What is bullying?
Bullying is actions or behaviors that involve persistent and prolonged psychological harassment. They are intended to humiliate, intimidate, isolate or eliminate an employee from the team. Bullying causes fear, anxiety, confusion, guilt, and a lowered assessment of professional suitability in the victim. Bullying is the use of psychological and economic violence.
Therefore, if your workplace is experiencing:
- vindictive, malicious behavior aimed at humiliating a person;
- Abuse of power and position by superiors;
- Hostile communication or obstruction of communication opportunities;
- affecting social relations in the workplace;
- deterioration of the life situation and negative impact on the employee’s health;
- the person experiencing violence is unable to defend himself or herself, and feels intimidated and harassed.
How to prevent bullying in the workplace?
- Use assertive communication to put limits on the bully;
- don’t let yourself be lulled into feeling guilty;
- don’t give in to pressure;
- do not allow aggression;
- communicate clearly that you do not agree with such behavior toward you;
seek support among employees; - turn to institutions that help eliminate such phenomena in the workplace.
