February 20 is also World Social Justice Day.
The idea behind the day is, among other things, to promote efforts to reduce poverty, social exclusion and unemployment.
“Social exclusion is a situation in which not everyone has equal access to opportunities and services that would allow them to lead a decent, happy life. It also refers to the inability to speak up and be heard according to the rules of the communities in which we live.
In theory, social exclusion can occur in several cases:
- When the bond between society and the individual is broken (lack of social solidarity), the individual ceases to participate in collective life and does not manifest civic activity,
- Exclusion is a consequence of economic differentiation,
- An individual is excluded when he does not participate in the process of exchange of goods and services,
- Exclusion is the result of the formation of different groups in society and the emergence of a difference of influence between them, voluntarily or against his will the individual is isolated from the rest of society/group. The division into “ours” and “outsiders” exists virtually everywhere. Where more people coexist, divisions form, but there are also individuals who do not participate (of their own free will or because they have been rejected) in these divisions.” (https://www.psychologgia-plus.pl/…/wykluczenie…/ accessed 20.02.25)
In practice, rejection can happen for a really huge number of reasons – someone has debts, a probation officer, a mental illness, dresses unfashionably, doesn’t do well in sports, science, doesn’t have a driver’s license, higher education, follows – or doesn’t follow – a religion…. At the same time, as humans, we have a very strong – and one of our basic needs – the need to belong. We would like to be accepted – just the way we are. Experiencing exclusion is associated with very strong emotions of fear and anger, aggression towards the environment that has rejected us, this can lead to withdrawal.
Being victimized by a crime such as violence can also be a factor associated with social exclusion.
